About Somerville-The history of Somerville MA, goes back to 1630 when it was first settled and became a part of Charlestown. It then gained its status as a town in 1842. The reason why it was separated from Charlestown, was because at that time Somerville was still rural. It became a city in the year 1872, because of industrialization and an increase in population.
